Oil Water Separator

Oil Water Separators

Are they important?

Oil -water separators are a necessary part of any water discharge system. All air compressors will put some oil and other hydrocarbons into the air lines.

For example, the following air compressor types typically put the following amounts of oil and hydrocarbons into the air lines:

 Air Compressor Amount of Oil
Brand new, high quality rotary screw air compressor 5 parts per million
Brand new, low quality rotary screw air compressor 30 parts per million
Brand new, high quality reciprocating air compressor 80 parts per million
Brand new, low quality reciprocating air compressor 200 parts per million
Poorly serviced rotary screw air compressor 30 parts per million
Poorly serviced reciprocating air compressor 300 parts per million

A lot of oil is entering your air lines everyday and it all adds up very quickly. These amounts of oil cannot be legally discharged into drainage systems, therefore making an oil-water separator essential for your compressed air system.

Sometimes filters and oil bypass lines can fail and pump straight oil into your air lines, a well setup compressed air system will have an oil-water separator to avoid large amounts of oil discharge.

The most basic 'off-the-shelf' oil-water separator is made from plastic. They are cheaper to purchase but require some ongoing maintenance.

There is also the highly recommended stainless steel oil-water separators that have an indefinite lifespan and minimal maintenance.

The following two types of oil-water separator have the following benefits and disadvantages:

Oil-Water Separator Type Benefits  Disadvantages
Plastic - Oil-Water Separator Stops oil from discharging into the drain  Cannot be kept in sunlight or plastic will perish
Simple to set up and maintain Needs 6 monthly changeover maintenance bag
  Relatively inexpensive to purchase
Can be sized to your air compressor
Stainless Steel- Oil-Water Separator Stainless steel will not rot or rust  More expensive than a plastic model
  Will last indefinitely
  No costly ongoing maintenance
