Oil -water separators are a necessary part of any water discharge system. All air compressors will put some oil and other hydrocarbons into the air lines.
For example, the following air compressor types typically put the following amounts of oil and hydrocarbons into the air lines:
A lot of oil is entering your air lines everyday and it all adds up very quickly. These amounts of oil cannot be legally discharged into drainage systems, therefore making an oil-water separator essential for your compressed air system.
Sometimes filters and oil bypass lines can fail and pump straight oil into your air lines, a well setup compressed air system will have an oil-water separator to avoid large amounts of oil discharge.
The most basic 'off-the-shelf' oil-water separator is made from plastic. They are cheaper to purchase but require some ongoing maintenance.
There is also the highly recommended stainless steel oil-water separators that have an indefinite lifespan and minimal maintenance.
