What is an Oil Water Separator & should I buy one?

Oil Water Separators are a necessary part of any water discharge system. All air Compressors will put some oil and other hydrocarbons into the air lines.

For instance, the following air compressor types typically put the following amounts of oil and hydrocarbons into the air lines:

Air Compressor	Amount of oil
Brand new good brand rotary screw compressor	5 parts per million
Brand new "cheap" brand rotary screw compressor	30 parts per million
Brand new good brand reciprocating compressor	80 parts per million
Brand new "cheap" brand reciprocating compressor	200 parts per million
Poorly serviced rotary screw compressor	30 parts per million
Poorly serviced reciprocating piston compressor	300 parts per million

You are pushing a lot of oil into your air lines every day and it all adds up. That oil cannot be legally discharged into drainage systems.

Sometimes filters and oil bypass lines fail and you can pump strait oil into your air lines. Good setups will always have an Oil Water separator in the compressed air system.
